Care & Maintenance

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Ateliers London products are designed and manufactured using only the highest quality of materials. To help maintain the quality of your products, we have a few simple tips as detailed below which provide general guidelines to help.

HANDLING

To avoid and limit any damage that may occur due to moving or relocation of furniture, we recommend that all products are carefully handled. Larger and heavier items should be carefully handled by a sufficient number of people so that the goods are not dragged or damaged.

We do not recommend that products are stacked, rested on any sides other than on the correct resting points.

GENERAL CLEANING

To ensure you follow the correct cleaning guidelines for specific materials, please see the relevant category instructions and refer to any specific manufacturers guidelines. We strongly advise against the use of any sanitizing product or harsh and abrasive chemical cleaning products, as these may damage the goods and void any warranty.

WOODEN FURNITURE

Ateliers London use only premium grade solid woods and/or wood veneers. Solid wood and wood veneer are both sensitive to light and water damage, so both need to be avoided where possible.

  • A basic and regular cleaning of most woods simply requires wiping the surfaces with a damp cloth with a very mild detergent, then dry off with a clean cloth.
  • We do not recommend using furniture polish, cleaner or wax, unless the specific product is already produced to accept these finishes. This can otherwise lead to a build-up and residue which can have a detrimental effect and alter the appearance of the furniture.
  • Do not allow hot or cold items to come in contact with the surfaces, where and appropriate and possible, use coasters and mats.
  • Do not place furniture in direct sunlight or in a direct heat source (e.g. radiators and heating vents), as this can cause damage to the furniture.
  • Wipe off any stains and spillage immediately (especially strong acidic juice or strong detergents).
  • Do not use indoor furniture in external areas, unless these items are produced for outdoor use.
  • We recommend that any Wooden outdoor furniture requires regular maintenance and surface treatment. We advise oiling or waxing the surfaces every 6months with a suitable outdoor treatment, however if in doubt, contact a member of our team and ask about our aftercare maintenance programme.

PAINTED AND LACQUER FINISH SURFACES

Our surface finishes include Lacquer, Paint, Stain and hand applied bespoke finishes, of which are typically built up in layers to various sheen levels as required e.g., matt, mid-sheen, high-gloss or bespoke textured.

  • The overall finish is generally water resistant, but we recommend any water spills are wiped off and dried to limit any markings.
  • Always use heat resistant mats to avoid damage on the surface area.
  • Avoid placing hot or cold items directly onto the surfaces, as this can cause heat stains.
  • Avoid dragging products across surfaces, especially high gloss.
  • For any bespoke finishes such as gold gilt or delicate surfaces, we only recommend using a light brush or feather duster on the surface.

LAMINATE SURFACES

Laminate surfaces may be cleaned with mild detergents, provided they are not abrasive or harsh substances, such as bleach or contain acids.

Always use heat resistant mats to avoid damage on the surface area.

UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE

Our products are manufactured using materials that ensure we achieve exacting quality standards and British Fire regulations standards in both Residential and Contract Commercial projects. The upkeep should be site specific and adapted to the nature of use e.g. Furniture used on Commercial projects will no doubt require regular care and attention due a high traffic and heaver usage than Residential projects.

FABRICS

  • Upholstery should be brushed with a soft cloth or gently vacuumed to remove dirt and dust particles.
  • Do not use any harsh detergents or cleaning agents intended for use on hard surfaces.
  • Liquid spills on fabric can be removed with a dry cloth if carried out immediately, dry cleaning may be required on more stubborn stains.
  • Avoid damping fabric surfaces heavily or rubbing, instead gently dab the any spills.
  • Where possible, follow the Fabric Manufacturers specific guidelines and instructions.
  • Outdoor fabrics are again specific to each manufacturers/suppliers instructions.

LEATHER

  • As leather is a natural and organic material, we recommend applying a leather conditioner every 6 months.
  • Leather hides may be subject to natural scars and over time can be susceptible to stretching and subsequent bagging.
  • Do not use creams, wax or polish on leather, instead use a damp cloth to remove grease and dust (take care not to soak the leather) and dry off with a soft cloth.
  • Where possible, follow the Fabric Manufacturers specific guidelines and instructions.

METAL FURNITURE

As our metal furniture is produced using many various types of solid metals, metal plating or special finishes, it is important to follow careful guidelines to ensure longevity of the surface finish.

  • Clean regularly with a soft damp cloth.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners, as this may scratch and remove, or damage top surface finishes.
  • Cleaning agents with chloride can harm the surface of the metal, so avoid cleaners with bleach or ammonia.
  • Do not use metal furniture outdoor or in damp areas, unless the furniture has been specified for outdoor use.
  • Always use heat resistant mats to avoid damage on the surface area.
  • Spillages should be cleaned and removed immediately, to avoid marking the surfaces.

OUTDOOR FURNITURE

Our products are manufactured using materials that ensure we achieve exacting quality standards and British Fire regulations standards in both Residential and Contract Commercial projects. The upkeep should be site specific and adapted to the nature of use e.g. Furniture used on Commercial projects will no doubt require regular care and attention due a high traffic and heaver usage than Residential projects.

  • Although outdoor upholstery will be manufactured using filling and fabrics suitable for outdoor use, upholstered items such as cushions and seat pads, should not be left outside during rain.
  • Wood furniture should be treated every 6 months with a surface treatment, using the appropriate oil, wax or sealant.
  • Wood furniture should not be left out in the winter or harsh weather conditions.
  • Grease marks can be removed with a de-greasing agent and mild scrubbing, followed by a cold-water rinse and dry off.
  • Wooden furniture can be cleaned using a mild detergent solution and a soft cloth.

OTHER MATERIALS

GLASS AND MIRROR

  • Use a glass cleaner and dry soft cloth to polish.
  • Microfiber cloths are ideal for cleaning glass and mirrors as they dont leave any fibers on the surface.

STONE: MARBLE, GRANITE, QUARTZ, CERAMIC, ENGINEERED

  • Dependent on the type of stone, most tend to be durable but often porous and prone to stains and markings. Where possible, our team ill advice and assist based on the use and environment.
  • Acids contained in foods and drinks e.g. wine, coffee can cause permanent stains.
  • Clean the surfaces with a warm soapy cloth and dry with a soft cloth or use standard polish products.
  • Do not use harsh cleaning agents, or cleaning cloths as this may damage the surfaces and void any warranty.
  • Most stone will be sealed as standard, this will not prevent all marking caused by acidic liquids etc.
